Restless Leg Syndrome

What is restless leg syndrome?

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a nervous system disorder that causes an urge to move your legs. The condition affects men, women, and children but is most prevalent in women and more severe in those middle-aged and older.

What are the symptoms of RLS?

Symptoms of RLS vary and may be occasional or frequent, depending on the severity of your condition. Sometimes, these symptoms only occur when you are sitting or lying down, and they often improve with movement and activity. The most common symptoms of RLS are:

  • Itching, tingling, or “crawling” sensations in your legs or arms
  • A compelling urge to move or rub limbs to relieve uncomfortable sensations
  • Pacing or tossing and turning
  • General restlessness
  • Sleep disruption

If your symptoms are severe enough to keep you from relaxing or sleeping well night after night, RLS may significantly affect the quality of your life. RLS is often misdiagnosed, but doctors can treat it successfully.

What causes RLS?

Genes play a role in whether you’ll develop RLS. Nearly half of the people suffering from the condition have a family member who has it, too. Other factors that contribute to the development of RLS include chronic diseases, medications, and even pregnancy. For some adults, drinking alcohol and not getting enough sleep may trigger symptoms.

Chronic illnesses that may contribute to the severity of RLS include Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and peripheral neuropathy. The doctors at Revive Medical work to improve your overall health and focus on treating each individual condition. For instance, when the Revive Medical team treats you for neuropathy, it may also relieve your RLS symptoms.

How is RLS treated?

Although there is no cure for RLS, a variety of treatments can alleviate uncomfortable symptoms. If your RLS is a result of an underlying health condition, your medical team treats the primary condition first and foremost. In many cases, avoiding certain foods, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, or any other triggers is a good first step.

If you regularly take medications for any health condition, it is important to discuss this with the doctors at Revive Medical. This may help them determine if the medications are making your RLS symptoms worse, and they can work with you to find natural alternatives, such as nutritional changes or laser therapies.
